I sanded the wood down with #220 grit, painted on the conditioner (it looks milky white but dries clear), wiped off the excess, and let it dry for about 15-30 minutes. Since pre-stain conditioner raises the grain, I again sanded with #220 grit sandpaper before staining. Stain with light layer.
