After a long period of psychological crisis, Van Gogh had lost his confidence in himself, as a person and as a painter. For a long time, he felt useless and did not even dare to go outside. To build up his self-confidence again, he started copying prints - a common exercise for beginning painters.

Zaaiers hielden Van Gogh zijn hele kunstenaarsleven bezig. In totaal maakte hij meer dan dertig tekeningen en schilderijen met hetzelfde thema. Deze zaaier schilderde hij in het najaar van 1888. Van Gogh werkte in die tijd samen met Paul Gauguin (1848-1903). Die vond dat hij minder naar de werkelijkheid moest werken, en meer uit zijn verbeelding.

The sower comes into view from the left-hand side, head down, scattering seeds with his large brown hand. Wheat was symbolic of the soul and eternity, and so the sowing of it could be read as a religious activity.
